Knots, Bends and Hitches


The "knots" we use as mountaineers actually include a variety of knots, bends and hitches.




  • Knot - A knot ties a climbing rope to itself. The loop formed by the knot may go around an object (i.e. an anchor or a harness), but the knot does not depend on the object.
  • Bend - A bend ties two climbing ropes together.
  • Hitch - A hitch ties a climbing rope to an object. A hitch will fall apart if the object is removed.
